Thanks tons!!What are the function and what controls the Three Enzyme Genes?
The 3 enzymes function to
1. bring lactose into the cell (beta-galactoside permease),
2. break lactose apart into glucose and galactose (beta-galactosidase),
3. metabolize the galactose formed by 2 (beta-galactoside-acetyltransferase).
These 3 enzymes are necessary to get lactose into bacterial cells and to metabolize it (to get the energy out of it).
But the only time they are made is when lactose is present.
Most of the time glucose is readily available, adn the 3 enzyme genes are repressed..
The release of that repression is a somewhat complex process that begins with the appearance of lactose in the medium outside the bacterial cell, and proceeds with the formation of molecules inside the cell that ultimately combine with the ';promoter'; site that is common to these 3 genes. So they are all 3 activated at once to produce their 3 enzymes..
