What are the primary functions of the medium access control layer?

';The Media Access Control (MAC) data communication protocol sub-layer, also known as the Medium Access Control, is a part of the data link layer specified in the seven-layer OSI model (layer 2).

It provides addressing and channel access control mechanisms that make it possible for several terminals or network nodes to communicate within a multipoint network, typically a local area network (LAN)';

Basically, the MAC layer provides the physical specifications of communication between devices over a network. Under MAC, every device on a network has a physical address that identifies it to the rest of the network.

Think of it like the postal service... you can be reached at any of several addresses... your home address, your work address, a PO Box - but each of them is identified with an address so that the postal service knows where to send the letter in order to get it to you.
